| JOURNALISM AND MEDIA STUDIES 1 ASSIGNMENT WIKI JOURNALISM Outcome: · Understand the principles of wiki operation, writing and editing · Use a wiki to produce original collaborative research and local knowledge on the Web · Use conventional journalism research techniques and Computer Assisted Research and Reporting tools to source and verify subject data SETUP Prior to the tutorial, students have to identify and learn about a South African media worker, journalist or editor (the subject). Bring the name and your motivation for producing a wiki on your subject choice to the tutorial During the tutorial, students form a group of no fewer than three but no more than four persons based on the size of tut groups. Students who do not attend tuts will be automatically added to a group. In the small groups, individual members motivate for their wiki subject. Each group can provide up to three subjects to the tutor. As an example, of a journalists’ profile wiki see - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Woodward Groups provide the list of potential subjects to tutors Tutors will provide the list of subjects to the lecturer It may not be possible to allocate groups their preferred subject as a result of duplication etc. The lecturer will compile a list detailing which groups will cover which subjects and pass these on to the tutors for forwarding In the small groups, students also decide what aspects of the source’s experience and career, each person will address (and which you have evidence to multi-source) and what roles people will play (researcher, fact checker). At least, the following aspects must be included:
Once a member, each student will join http://zajournos.wetpaint.com RESEARCH Use basic journalism research approaches (face to face or telephonic interview, documentary research) and techniques and tools for Computer Assisted Research and Reporting (email; wikis; social media; databases, online documents; search tools) to investigate your subject. Remember to verify every fact presented in the wiki through a secondary source where possible. After researching your subject, open http://zajournos.wetpaint.com and locate the name of your subject in the drop down list on the right of the home page Enter your data under the relevant headings (see above). Each section entry should be no shorter than 100 words and no longer than 200 words. Identify and record the primary and secondary references consulted to produce the wiki profile. Number your references Use the JMS guidelines for referencing sources (especially online sources). You can find this here: Reference Guidelines COLLABORATION & CORROBORATION Allocate a colleague to fact check your information (as the assignment is created using Wiki technology, tutors can check to see whether a member of your group checked an entry before it was submitted). If a fact checker finds incorrect spelling, that facts are inaccurate, that words indicating bias have been included, or that information is unverified etc, s/he should change the information immediately and/or leave an Edit Note that informs what change was made and why (or what change needs to be made) You can view changes someone may have made to your wiki entry and who made them [and why] under Complete History at the bottom of the page MEDIA Make sure that you include hypertext links to websites, articles and other relevant media in your wiki Acquire a mugshot or picture of your subject or video of your subject Tag your wiki entry with no fewer than ten keywords that will help a user find your entry online Finally, email your subject before the assignment deadline date to get your subject/source to verify the wiki entry in writing. A bonus 5% will be awarded to groups that can demonstrate (physically) that their subject has verified their wiki entry. Forward your tutor the email from the subject to verify that the content of the wiki is true and correct. Total mark will be allocated per group For fun, you can also forward your entry to your Twitter account or Facebook page when done. Deadline: 19 October (SA Press Freedom Day) 23h59 (20% of total mark) | |

I join this wiki because I need to know more about what happening around the world. I don't want to be a journalist. I just love the role of journalist around the world. We are doing to write our final examinations so everybody need to read his books whether in groups or individual. This time of the year its stressing time and everybody experience pressure whether he/she is well prepared for exam sections.
